NEW ZEALAND GROUP RETURN FROM WORLD GYMNAESTRADA
World Gymnaestrada is the name of the FIG’s official and pinnacle event for General Gymnastics (now known as Gymnastics for All). This event is non competitive, happens every four years and attracts over 24,000 participants of all ages. The Gymnaestrada is held over seven days and usually during the month of July. Group performances must involve teams of 10 or more performers for indoor displays, while at least 150 members are required for the large outdoor performances.
Fifty participants, ranging in ages from 8 to 58, from New Zealand went to this year’s event in Dornbirn, Austria. They were among 22,000 participants from 56 countries. The group comprised two teams – one from Tauranga and a combined group from Wellington and Wanganui. They performed admirably during their three performances and were also part of the English Speaking Countries National Evening – a Gala performance together with Britain, Australia, Trinidad and Tobago, USA and Canada.
Pam Walters and Katherine Jones led the group, which started preparation for this event two and a half years ago. Tas Evans attended as one of only four FIG appointed expert assessors to evaluate the 300+ performances.
